At a red carpet event on Saturday in NYC, Ana Ortiz — who play’s the title character’s sister on the show — dished that she’s expecting soon and getting the nursery ready. “I just met with the decorator today. I didn’t want it too frilly frou-frou, too canopy princess-y. So we’re doing a sort of eco-friendly, beautiful room. I’m not sure of the colour palette yet, but it’s going to be gorgeous,” she told People magazine.

I think this show may truly have one of the more eco-friendly casts around. Congrats to Ana!

ABC’s hit show Ugly Betty has been buzzing with green baby tips and news, thanks to actress Vanessa Williams. The 45-year-old has kids of many ages and has been a kind of den mother to a cast with a few new parents in the fold. The wife of actor Eric Mabius, interior designer Ivy Sherman, says Williams always “wants to talk babies. She has great advice about being organic,” adds Sherman. “She has friends with different cool baby-related companies, one an organic baby [products] company called Green Baby.”

There are lots of sites out there with the name “green baby” — but could Williams be specifically talking about the online shop Green Baby NYC?

ES: How do you find time to be greener while managing the demands of motherhood?

JE: I admit, I am not some perfect, green, mother person. But I do use planet/baby-friendly household cleaners, detergent, diapers, wipes, baby soaps/shampoos, flooring, paint, crib mattress and bottles. Plus, all the recycling. It’s a start in the right direction. I learned a lot since getting involved with Healthy Child, Healthy World. They’re awesome.

ES: How did motherhood change your outlook on the environment?

JE: Motherhood has really connected me to and given me an expanded view and perception of “future” that I never had before. So then I immediately started feeling more aware and responsible for the consequences of all my actions with regard to how they were going to affect my son and his current and future life and environment. It certainly upped my “game.”

According to The National Inquirer (always a reliable source of news, grin), Christina Aguilera and Nicole Ritchie are planning on forming a “Mommy & Me” club with other celebrity moms. “The call each other about how to get their babies to stop crying, how to get them to sleep, dirty diapers, and organic baby food,” a Hollywood tattle reveals in the March 9 issue of The National Enquirer. “Their babies may have brought them closer….they find it so helpful that they think there’s a need for a club for celebrity moms.”

We all know how much influence the Hollywood scene has, so it would be great if more famous mom and dads promoted the growing organic baby foods industry — as well as other aspects of green parenting. Nicole Richie has made news before for her obsession with natural cleaning products and diapers from Seventh Generation — so perhaps she’ll inspire other moms to go green!
