Soleil Moon Frye — aka, the former Punky Brewster — has taken her “The Little Seed” eco-friendly shop and hooked up with giant Amazon.com! This will surely expose her range of eco-friendly baby products to an even larger audience and we’re psyched to see it happen. Here’s a bit of how the venture for The Little Seed came to be. From the website,

“After spending months on the web researching and buying non-toxic and organic products that wouldn’t irritate our babies’ skin, we realized that the search to find these items was shockingly difficult” says Paige Goldberg Tolmach, who also co-founded Swoon Candles. Adds Soleil Moon Frye, actor/writer/director: “ We wanted to create a physical space – and an accompanying website – where parents had the option to purchase stylish organic and eco products exclusively.”

Flush with new seed funding, the popular Babylife brand has also undergone a name change to Lifefactory (which is a bit too industrial for us, but c’est la vie.). Alarm:Clock broke the news that the company raised $750K in additional funding — something that in this economy means good news for the green baby industry. Apparently, the company plans to diversify their current lineup beyond their bottle offerings — with an eye on products that are “are based on organic materials.”

I have one of Lifefactory’s “silicon sleeve” bottles at home and absolutely love it. It’s easy to grip, contains no toxins, and is less likely to shatter when dropped. In fact, the one time I did lose it (at 3:30AM, no less), it just bounced around the floor. So, it’s great to see that the company is surviving the tough times — and forging ahead with some potential new products. Maybe too they’ll drop the price of their $18 9oz bottles?

Check out the official site here.

I often have those conversations with my wife where we wonder what the world will be like for our kids in 10 years. After all, 10 years ago nobody I knew had cell phones, blogged, bought stuff online, or took pictures with a digital camera. It will be amazing to see what lies ahead — and Microsoft has given us a small glipmse of what a decade of progress might look like. Granted, much of this is probably more like 20 years or more away — but still, could this be our kid’s world when they’re our age?

Some interesting green baby business took place last week with the announcement that The Nest Collective had acquired the leading frozen organic baby and toddler meal maker, Plum Organics. “With a focus on the needs of children and parents, Plum Organics felt like a natural extension of our greater portfolio,” said Sheryl O’Loughlin, CEO of The Nest Collective. “Our mission at Nest is to create a nurturing environment where great brands can grow. Now, with our support, Plum Organics can stay true to its core mission and accelerate its growth through cutting edge innovation and the business synergies of The Nest Collective.”

The move allows Plum Organics, which was started only in 2005, to further expand its product line and enter into new markets. “As an entrepreneur and mom, I saw the Nest as a place to nurture a larger vision while staying true to the heart and soul of my company,” said Gigi Lee Chang, Founder of Plum Organics. “Nest represents a new lens through which business is conducted. Together with a talented and dynamic team, Nest balances the need for results, while upholding the values that Plum Organics was built upon.”

Congrats to Plum Organics on the buyout! Here’s to hoping the partnership expands the brand into more supermarkets around the nation.

One of the reasons why I love using gDiapers is the benefit of chucking those urine-stained diapers directly into my compost pile. I only wish I could do the same with those containing feces — but my home compost pile (like many others) isn’t efficient enough to break down the waste safely. A fairly-new diaper service serving the California Bay Area called Earth Baby seeks to change all that by providing compostable diapers that are truly compostable. The only difference is, you don’t do a thing. Instead, for $24.99 per month, the company picks up your dirty nappies (and baby wipes) and breaks them down in an industrial composting facility. From the site,

Composting human waste is safe, but only when done properly. Our diapers are composted at elevated temperatures to ensure that any harmful bacteria or pathogens such as salmonella are destroyed during the composting process.

Earth Baby also makes sure their products are sustainable — with eco-friendly diapers, chlorine and fragrance free wipes, and a host of other all-natural products. Deliveries even arrive to your door in a recycled paper bag. Just one more way for parents to fight the disposable diaper battle — while feeling good that all of those dirty nappies are building soil quickly, instead of sitting in a landfill for decades.

To see if Earth Baby serves your area, jump here.

They’re one of many quality bath and body care shops that cater to the green baby scene — and we particularly like their Organic Baby Wash & Shampoo with lavender & chamomile.

Anyways, the company is announcing that not only have they gone carbon-neutral with help from CarfonFund.org, but the packaging for their products is now much greener. “We’ve always used all-natural, earth friendly ingredients for our baby care products so updating our packaging to more earth friendly materials made sense,” said Andrea Salisbury, President and founder.

The company has added Fiberstone — a tree-free, low carbon footprint material made from natural minerals. According to the release, “One ton of FiberStone, which is made from calcium carbonate (natural “chalk”), saves 16,000 gallons of water, 9,000 BTU’s of energy, and 20 trees! FiberStone™ papers can also be used for labels, tags, unit cartons, boxes, brochures, catalogs, banners, and many other printed products.”

Nice work, CC! You can check out the rest of their bath and body line — as well as their great selection of toddler and kid gear here.
